Primary Bedroom

I'm excited to share some photos of our almost completed bedroom. It is calm yet interesting and feels like a lighter, brighter version of our downstairs.

We changed the room we use as our primary bedroom during our renovation. Our new room was previously a small bedroom with a tiny room off of it (only accessible through the bedroom). We took down the wall separating the two rooms and gained a great size primary bedroom with enough continuous wall space to accommodate a king bed plus two nightstands. Although our original bedroom was almost identical in size, the layout prevented us from fitting a king bed. Three doors and two windows made for a lot of interrupted wall space. I also used this opportunity to wire for sconces and add some outlets.

We never furnished either of the original rooms, so it was a blank slate post renovation. I knew I wanted the room to be calming and to lean into a blue and brown color palette. I pretty quickly settled on a bed (our finish is no longer available), rug (no longer available), and drapery (purchased locally through Kellogg Collection), but then things stalled as I focused on our main floor. I eventually settled on nightstands and a dresser. I then pulled a couple pieces of art from our original bedroom and added a lamp.

I finally made this room a priority earlier this year and now the only thing left to do is paint or wallpaper. There is so much wall space that wallpapering will not be cheap, so I'm delaying that for now. (maybe I'll paint it a warmer white?). I also like the idea that there is still something for me to tinker with in this space (in addition to bedding). I don't like to call a space "done".

I've never had a bedroom big enough for anything more than the basics as an adult. But, this corner was the perfect spot for a seating area.
I strangely don't love mirrors. I always prefer art. But, a full length mirror is very helpful when getting dressed and I don't have a great spot for one in our bathroom or closet. So, I played around with putting a mirror behind the corner chair and the layered effect really sold me. It softens the mirror a bit and makes me feel like I am getting more out of the wall space than just the mirror (chair! throw blanket! pillow! garden stool!). This is the mirror I went with and the finish is soft and plays well with our brass and gold pieces.
I love having the chair as a spot to sit, take a call or read without getting in bed. The chair was a Facebook Marketplace find that I had reupholstered (hot tip: Pottery Barn & West Elm sell fabric by the yard that is really affordable).

This long wall was home to our dog's crate which she no longer needs. It did serve as a great spot to set things that I needed to take downstairs. So, I decided to add a bench. This exact bench was a bit of an impulse purchase. I'd been shopping in person, scouring Facebook Marketplace and looking at big box retail sites for quite some time without any luck. Then one day, I looked at this bench and decided to go for it. I LOVE the legs. The fabric isn't exactly chenille as described (so we will see how well it stands up to the cats) and it's definitely a shade or two darker than pictured. But, it works and I would have it re-upholstered down the line if needed.
I've used this bench way more than anticipated. I sit on It almost every morning to put my shoes on and as expected, set things down on it all the time. Art from Diana Bramblia completed this wall.
Pillows from Chairs with Flair rounded out the bench. I used leftover drapery fabric to make a few pillows. A lumbar for the chair and a square for the bench. Then, I used the bathroom cafe curtain fabric (a stripe) for a lumbar on the bench. The guiding aesthetic principle for me in this space has been interesting yet serene in a blue and brown color palette. Repeating patterns helps keep things calm yet interesting. This bench really helped cement the blue (there are hints of it in the rug and quite a bit of it in the drapery)

I will eventually update our bedding. I originally purchased a comfortor, but this room runs warmer than our prior bedroom and the comforter is too hot. We use the quilt I bought to layer at the bottom of the bed, which I love (it has held up so well to almost weekly washes), but is a bit darker than I want as our main bedding. And, as much as I love white bedding, it is not a good choice given that our dog sleeps with us. So, I'm on the hunt for a cream or beige patterned quilt and will then likely have Allison of Chairs with Flair make me a lumbar out of our drapery fabric. But, I'm not In a hurry.

For fun, I'll leave you with a photo of our bathroom. I love how the bedroom and bathroom speak to each other. I am so pleased with how far our bedroom has come and I only wish I'd made it a priority sooner!
